The holiness of the everlasting wrath: Jonathan Edwards

You spurn all who go astray from your statutes,
for their cunning is in vain.
All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross,
therefore I love your testimonies.
My flesh trembles for fear of you,
and I am afraid of your judgments.

My eyes shed streams of tears,
because people do not keep your law.

(Psalm 119: 118-120, 136)

Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell; and if God should let you go, you would immediately sink and swiftly descend and plunge into the bottomless gulf, and your healthy constitution, and your own care and prudence, and best contrivance, and all your righteousness, would have no more influence to uphold you and keep you out of hell, than a spider's web would have to stop a falling rock.

It is everlasting wrath. It would be dreadful to suffer this fierceness and wrath of Almighty God one moment; but you must suffer it to all eternity. There will be no end to this exquisite horrible misery. When you look forward, you shall see a long for ever, a boundless duration before you, which will swallow up your thoughts, and amaze your soul; and you will absolutely despair of ever having any deliverance, any end, any mitigation, any rest at all. You will know certainly that you must wear out long ages, millions of millions of ages, in wrestling and conflicting with this almighty merciless vengeance; and then when you have so done, when so many ages have actually been spent by you in this manner, you will know that all is but a point to what remains. So that your punishment will indeed be infinite. Oh, who can express what the state of a soul in such circumstances is! All that we can possibly say about it, gives but a very feeble, faint representation of it; it is inexpressible and inconceivable: For "who knows the power of God's anger?"

  1. Absolutely incomprehensible. A sobering solemn warning to all who travel by the broad road which leads to eternal destruction. Sinful pleasures are but only for a moment, and then the serpent bites, the demonic magnets of death snatches you to your endless doom. That place call hell is forever with no second chance for anyone. Think of all the people that you have known, and those that we hear about that are murdered, killed in an auto accident, old age, etc., that now have so quickly moved to the eternal state - their destinies are now marked, and forever!

The Lord God has made a way of escape, it is a very narrow way, it will cost you all. You come through the door of Jesus Christ, and ALL that He IS! Contrition, repentance, Godly sorrow over your debaucheries, wickedness, and sins. Crying out for mercy that the Father gives through the blood sacrifice and death of His only begotten son Jesus Christ. Surrendering your ungodly desires to the will of the Lord God Almighty, and walking in faithful obedience to the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.

Grace Alone! Faith Alone! Christ Jesus Alone! YES! Proved authentic by an obedient lifestyle that is in submission to the inerrant Truths of the complete body of scripture which is the Bible.

The same can be said of the person in Christ - incomprehensible for what the Lord God has in store for us His redeemed!

I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to grow in Truth to go to the following web site and to read the blogs and articles, and to listen daily to the sermon messages by pastor John MacArthur.
Lastly, read the Bible daily (I use the MacArthur study Bible ESV, also have the KJV), pray fervently daily!
