UPDATE: Things are moving fast with the storm now as the details are hammered down and the landfall is projected. I put up a great list of preparation tips, here. Many of them are things I've never thought about, like filling the washing machine with fresh water, or draining the hot water tank if you run out of water<.
The Weather Channel has a breaking news update titled "East Coast prepares for Sandy's wrath." Of course since this is a Christian end times prophecy site I make ironic note that secular people can claim that a mindless storm can render wrath but an Intelligent and Holy God doesn't. (i.e. "God is love"). Anyway, here is news on Sandy, more at the link above.

Though Hurricane Sandy is a Category 1 strength right now, don't let that fool you "said Hurricane Specialist Carl Parker on The Weather Channel. "It is a very large storm, a hybrid storm, the area of strong winds is going to be absolutely enormous by the time it come into the northeast, and that’s why it is going to be a high-impact system."
"Officials did not mince words, telling people to be prepared for several days without electricity."
"Be forewarned," said Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. Assume that you will be in the midst of flooding conditions, the likes of which you may not have seen at any of the major storms that have occurred over the last 30 years."
"I'm tired. I am tired," Douglas Jumper, who turns 58 on Saturday, said through tears. "We don't need this again."
Prophetic Note: We're all tired, I understand his concern and his weariness. However, the storms will only continue coming faster and faster as the Tribulation nears. And after the Rapture the frequency will never let up until the Day and Hour Jesus returns. For now, JESUS is the shelter in the storm. Guy 1: At this point it is really all but certain that we're going to get a huge storm in the Northeast, and probably one of the worst that we've seen in a very long time.
Guy 2: At least for October. This is unprecedented for early October.
Guy 1: We've never seen a tropical system do this, come up and hook left like this. That's never happened in the record, which is amazing.
Guy 2: They always seem to get sucked out but this one is going to get sucked back in, and all of us here at the Weather Channel are going 'wow, this is crazy!'
